Jennifer Marshall

Artist’s Statement

My first love was horses, and I studied them and drew them from a very early age, and so my skills of observation, and drawing began to be developed, and have grown with having horses of my own.

A deep love of the Australian bush where I grew up, soon manifested itself in my landscapes.

Later a fascination with our unique Australian history has combined with the love of the bush, horses and the country way of life, and developed into forays into painting aspects of that history.

Meeting and later marrying Ron Marshall, a fellow artist who had similar interests, means that we are in the delightful position of being able to work together on our painting projects, sharing our passion for history and nature, and exploring techniques to better express this in our paintings.

Jennifer grew up in the country where she developed a great love and appreciation of the Australian bush and rural life, and started her education at Upper Burringbar Public School, a 1-2 teacher school in Northern NSW and it was here that her talent was first recognised and she sold her first drawings and paintings.

She attended Murwillumbah High School and was within the top 10 art students in the 1973 NSW Higher School Certificate, but chose to do a Dip.Ed. in General Primary Teaching at Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education in Lismore, (now the Southern Cross University) rather than go to Art School in Sydney. During this time Jennifer began selling works in local galleries under her maiden name of Jowett.

From 1977 until 1987 Jennifer lived in several different central NSW locations, exhibiting her work in local galleries and country NSW exhibitions, winning numerous awards, including many Peoples Popular Choice Awards.
From 1988 until 2006 Jennifer lived in the Mackay region, again exhibiting locally and winning many awards including Open, Representational, Traditional, Pastel, Portrait, and Peoples Popular Choice Awards.

In 1993 Jennifer was accepted as a “Master Pastellist” by the Pastel Society of Australia,
In 1994 and 1995 she tutored pastel classes at James Cook University’s Mackay Campus.

In 2000 Jennifer married fellow artist Ron Marshall with whom she had won the Mackay Airport Mural Competition in 1996. (These murals now hang at Mackay Tourism Information Centre.)
From then she painted under her married name of Jennifer Marshall.
Ron and Jennifer had been painting similar subjects … early Australian history, landscapes, seascapes and working horses. Together they have embarked on a series of historical paintings about an old gold mining town called the “Mount Britton Collection”, and a series of paintings about “The Australian Light Horse”.
Jennifer also paints portraits… of horses, dogs and people. Jennifer has worked in soft pastels and also acrylic, but more recently uses alkyd oils.
She and Ron reproduce high quality giclee prints of many of their original works.
In 2006 Ron and Jennifer sold their home in Mackay and moved to the “Rose and Rodeo Capital of Queensland”, the lovely historic, country town of Warwick, where they have set up their studio, and become involved with the local art community.

"The Anzac On The Wall"

This high quality CD has 15 tracks of poignant beautiful songs. A marvellous gift.

(and yes that is Ron's painting "Desert Persuit" on the cover!) Details

$22.50 inc postage

I picked up the print today from our nosy small town postal worker. "What did you get from Australia?" she asked. When I remarked that it was a print of the Australian Light Horse in WWI all that generated was a very puzzled look.
In any event the print is absolutely gorgeous . . . better "in person" than on the website! Thanks so much for sending it out so fast. Now I've got to make some wall space available . . .

Dear Mr. Marshall,

Your print on canvas "The Charge" was given to me at my retirement dinner by my officers of the Special Operations Component, Coral Springs Police Department in Coral Springs, Florida. Trully stunning rendition which captures the excitement of the moment while conveying a warmth of comeradeship to the end. It will hang in my study above my collection of King and Country Lighthorsemen collectibles.

I served 35 years with Coral Springs Police Department with the last four years as Captain of the S.O.C. which is 26 officers strong with various units (Tactical & Gang, K-9, Bikes and Substations).

Your painting made my day, thank you, F McK.
